What is L-Carnitine
L-Carnitine is an amino acid with a wide range of benefits, such as – enhanced fat loss, muscle growth, repair and recovery. It is formed in the liver and kidneys from the combination of the amino acids – lysine and methionine. There are a number of ways to introduce L-Carnitine into our diets, through meat and particular vegetables (such as avocado and soy beans), as well as through nutritional supplements.
The speciality of L-Carnitine, is in its ability to shuttle free fatty acids into the mitochondria of working cells, to be metabolized into energy. This process helps promote fat loss and storage of glycogen in the muscles. It can also aid in the recovery and reduction of muscle soreness and tissue damage, but it is highly dependant on the time at which it is supplemented.
According to your particular fitness goal, L-Carnitine’s use varies. When trying to loose weight, it must be supplemented with every major meal of the day (at least half an hour before), but with muscle gain endeavors, must be supplemented before and after a workout along with fast absorbing carbs to increase insulin levels in the body. These different nutritional plans are similar in that it allows for muscle cells to store L-Carnitine, for their use at the most opportune time.
